Plaza Carjacking

The T-D is reporting on a carjacking early this morning at Southside Plaza.

The car was described as a black Nissan Sentra four-door sedan with chrome wheels and Virginia license tags KJS 7726.

The suspect was described as a young black man with a thin build and wearing a yellow T-shirt and black shorts.

Fun on 47th

According to today’s T-D, a domestic warrant and a brief standoff led to Richmond SWAT entering that apartment building on W. 47th in the middle of the night.

June 16, 2008

Robbery & Assault @ Wythe

A woman was assaulted and robbed this morning on the grounds of George Wythe High School. According to police, the assaulter is described as “a black man in his mid 20s, about 5 feet, 5 inches tall and wearing a gray shirt and blue denim shorts…close-cropped hair, a goatee and tattoos on both arms.”

Shots & Pursuits

An argument turned into a shooting last night, apparently in the Ashton Square apartments. Combined with the police chase that ended with a truck plowing through the gates at George Wythe High School, it’s been an active 24 hours for the general Midlo/WH Blvd vicinity.

33rd St Homicide

A woman’s body was found inside a home at 102 W. 33rd St late Sunday afternoon. Police are treating the incident as a homicide.

Shooter sentenced to 30 years

Dante Lamont Lewis, who shot ice cream vendor Daniel Teodorescu in the parking lot of Greene Elementary, was sentenced today to 30 years in prison.

A website set up in October to help pay for some of Teodorescu’s medical bills is still alive and accepting donations.

March 26, 2008

Shooting on Semmes

Today’s T-D is reporting on a shooting in the vicinity of Semmes & 34th last night. It was apparently the culmination of an argument, but not many other details are out yet.

March 14, 2008

Late-night visitors

At least 2 of us in Forest View were repeatedly harassed tonight by an incomprehensible gentleman banging on our front doors. If you happen to see an erratic-acting, intoxicated dark-skinned man wearing a hat and riding a woman’s bicycle, keep an eye on him. I suspect he’s just a random crackhead, but who knows anymore.

March 11, 2008

Weekend shooting & robbery

This one slipped through the cracks on Saturday, between the high winds, power outages and whatnot. Two armed men shot at and robbed two men on Boroughbridge Rd ; one man received a gunshot wound in the leg.

We saw the police cars en route but, as it was roughly the same time that the Belt Blvd gas station canopy collapsed, assumed they were headed to Chevron.

RPD spreading the word

A couple of readers have mentioned receiving automated phone calls from Richmond PD alerting residents to an increase in both automotive and residential break-ins. The messages seem to be targeting the area around Forest View Rescue Squad, even though the crime map doesn’t show too many in that area.

Copper thief hits Hull St substation

Unfortunately for him, the substation near Hull St & Belt Blvd hit back. Following an explosion and fireball, police found Richard Croker on fire; he was subsequently left on with serious burns over 65 percent of his body.

February 22, 2008

2 days of fights at George Wythe

For the second day in a row, police had to break up fights at George Wythe High School. At least 1 student was arrested, and at least 1 teacher was injured as a result of the fighting.

February 11, 2008

The “other” ice cream shooting

Dante Lamont Lewis was convicted today of 6 charges related to his shooting & wounding ice cream vendor Daniel Teodorescu in the parking lot of Greene Elementary last fall.

Chesterfield Police Pursuit ends locally

About 15 Richmond & Chesterfield police cars (and a couple of fire/rescue) have descended on Jahnke & Dorchester Ave. A loud crash was followed by lights & sirens galore, as Jahnke between Forest Hill & the railroad tracks was saturated with emergency vehicles.

Edit: Apparently a high-speed chase out of Chesterfield crossed into the city, came up Jahnke and ended abruptly at 5101 Dorchester. I was turned away before I could get closer than a couple hundred yards out, but it appears if the car hit the house itself. Photography was frowned upon.

Rescue took at least one person away, presumably an occupant of the car being pursued. Here’s hoping the residents of the house didn’t get injured in this mess.

Another robbery

The Stratford Hills SunTrust was robbed this afternoon. Police describe the robber as a black man, 25-35 years, 5′9″ to 5′11″, heavy build and a salt-and-pepper beard. He was wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt, a puffy white jacket and dark pants and left in a silver VW Jetta.

January 2, 2008

SunTrust robbed

Apparently the SunTrust bank at Forest Hill & 47th was robbed this morning. I’ve yet to see any media mention of it thus far, and the RPD crime report site likely won’t update ’til tomorrow…

December 15, 2007

Rude Awakening

Nothing says “Good Morning!” like the sight of a fire truck, several police cars and a man collapsed on the ground right outside your window at 7AM on a Saturday. What at first appeared to be the after math of a shooting or stabbing turned out not to be. Apparently a very intoxicated individual ran into asign at the railroad crossing, then fled on foot, and made it 1.5 blocks before running out of steam.

December 11, 2007

Mailbox explosions

Today’s T-D is reporting on two mailbox explosions, believed to be caused by homemade explosives, in the Cedarhurst neighborhood. I heard some distant “booms” last night around that time, but chalked it up to the McCrory’s demolition cleanup or general noisiness. Here’s hoping it’s nothing more than bored neighborhood kids.

December 4, 2007

Police to greet Huguenot students

Huguenot High students will be greeted by Richmond Police tomorrow morning following a series of fights over the past two days. Reportedly a recent talent show sparked the incidents that culminated with one student receiving serious injuries.

No indictment in Baskin Robbins shooting

Word has trickled out that a Richmond grand jury decided against indicting David Fielding for his actions. The Stratford Hills business community is said to be delighted with the decision.

Now, if the Baskin Robbins owner would just do something about the boarded up window and the ripped awning…

Fatal Shooting

A shooting at St. John’s Wood apartments has left a woman dead. Both the T-D and NBC12 are reporting that the shooting is likely domestic in nature. Channel 12 quotes a police spokesperson as saying “This sector is normally a very quiet neighborhood…We do get reports for various types of crime, but it is a relatively quiet neighborhood,” but I seem to recall a similar shooting either at St John’s Wood or the adjoining complex within the last year or so.

October 31, 2007

Students assaulted @ Wythe

Channel 12 is reporting on the assault of 3 Governor’s School students at George Wythe HS this afternoon. The students, while awaiting rides home, were attacked by 6 as-yet unnamed individuals, resulting in a concussion and several broken bones. No arrests have yet been made.

RPS officials have announced the interim moving of the Governor’s School pickup point from Wythe to Lucille Brown MS.

Citywide dog law passes

Richmond City Council last night passed legislation making it illegal to chain up a dog outside for more than an hour. It’s hardly breaking news at this point, but I thought it warranted a mention in the context of our neighborhoods. I see on a regular basis a large number of dogs in my neighborhood (Forest View) and others nearby (Northrup & Jahnke particularly) tied up for hours at a time, usually with little shelter or water. Typically, they’re pit bulls or rottweilers and the owners, when present, clearly have little regard for the animals beyond owning a “status symbol.” In the end, I suspect this law won’t do much to change things, but at least it might bring a little lasting attention to an issue that usually gets swept under the rug.
