Superintendent search forum

Maybe it was the lack of weekend rain, the Lebanese food festival, or maybe it was just a general apathy. Whatever the reason, Saturday’s public forum on choosing a new RPS Superintendent drew a mere 5 people.

The School Board will see tomorrow night, at the Patrick Henry Charter School vote, what brings the public out. We want change and we want to work WITH the School Board to create this change.

It wasn’t apathy on our parts - I distinctly remember turning to my husband at 9:55 while we were sitting on the wall at the entrance to the farmer’s market, watching our children play themselves to exhaustion, and saying, “Hey, we’re going to miss the school board’s superintendent meeting.”
If it’d been at naptime, I would’ve been able to go. I still may attend the evening meeting scheduled next.

Perhaps another way for the board to gather input is online through web-based survey or forum. A confidential survey might be better than an open forum to prevent sniping and bickering. Saturday morning might not be the best time for families with school-age children to show up for a meeting.

I didn’t know about the superintendent meeting but there are several more and I’ll make sure to show up to one. For schedule, go to http://nearwestendnews.net/2008/05/14/perception-and-our-public-schools-event-and-superintendent-search/. I agree with pagalina that Saturday mornings aren’t the best time. I know that this past Saturday, my family had three places to be at once.

They’re having them at various times in different parts of the city, probably so that everyone can catch one at a convenient time. I’m not going to take the lack of turnout at our “local” meeting as a reflection on the amount of input we want. I also suspect that a few of the neighbors are a wee bit tired of thinking about the school board :)

Alas, the first forum @ TJ was as sparsely attended as this one. Perhaps the upcoming meeting @ Franklin Military will be better attended, but I suspect it won’t be.

I am confused about the point of these forums - what is the goal of these meetings?

  8. posted by Dan at May 19, 2008 5:26 pm :

I agree with pagalina; why not augment the forums with a web-based poll or form? That way, schedule conflicts won’t be an issue, and we wouldn’t be using up our precious $4-per-gallon gasoline trucking around town. (Well, for this, anyway.)

Go to http://richmond.k12.va.us/ and click on the online “Take the Superintendent Search - Public Hearing Community Survey.” It only takes a few minutes.
