PH Charter vote moved

Gray brought this up comments to another post, but I thought it warranted a more prominent mention. The school board discussion on the Patrick Henry charter school initiative is scheduled for the 4:30 portion of today’s meeting, with a closed meeting to follow. It’s likely too late to do anything about it, but contacting your board rep today might be therapeutic, if not exactly productive.

Now on RVA news op-ed: http://rvanews.com/2008/05/school-board-to-discuss-patrick-henry-at-430pm/

    Check out Wolf’s response.

A letter from Carol Wolf on the RVA news:

“Changing an agenda at the last minute, for whatever reason, is not something that instills trust. There is nothing that can be said by either proponents or opponents to the Patrick Henry Charter Initiative that cannot, or should not, be said to the widest possible audience. We gain nothing as a system or a society when we appear to engage in efforts that will squelch public comment or the right to dissent.

Dissent is as American as the 4th of July. Elected officials who seek to stifle public comment or dissent by scheduling meetings at inconvenient times, harm the fundamental freedoms that this nation is supposed to promote and protect.

I respectfully and firmly disagree with this action. ~ Carol”

I had arranged for someone to come in to work for me so I could attend tonight’s meeting with my mom (a retired educator who is extremely interested in the PHCI) but cancelled the plans after Richard’s email last night. The ironic thing is that when I called my mom to tell her there wouldn’t be a vote, she asked, “Are you sure they won’t vote on it anyway?” I said, “I can’t imagine they[d be sneaky enough to vote on it when they said (presumably in writing) that they wouldn’t.” I guess they came up with the next-most-sneaky thing to do. Way to go, school board.
On the upside, I hope every single one of the board and review committee read the newspaper on Friday morning and had to take a Tums. I will kiss Bart Hinkle right on the nose if I ever meet him.

Something told me to check out Hills & Heights before heading down to City Hall tonight. Thanks for letting us know about this rather distressing turn of events.

Here is a comment I left on RVA news regarding the School Board meeting earlier this evening:

Some of the questions from the School Board were a real hoot especially the ones regarding ADA compliance, budget, transportation, admissions/open enrollment, and segregation –the very issues that go unsolved in the RPS system to this day. RPS administration reminds me of the parent that smokes cigarettes and tells her children not to smoke.

Overall though, it is looking good for the charter.
