Patrick Henry Charter update

At last night’s school board meeting, the PH Charter group had their proposal returned pending more information. Meetings with the school board to provide that information should occur soon, with a tentative vote scheduled by the board for May 5.

An excerpt from a Lisa Dawson letter:
“As I have said before, the question of
whether or not the charter school will be accepted is not a
political one but rather, simply put, whether the proposal
establishes that the students will be educated at least as
well as they would if they attended a Richmond Public School….”

I bet the Patrick Henry Charter educational standards will surpass that of an average elementary RPS where a report card of all “B’s” and one “C” is considered “honor roll.”

I cannot fathom how School Board could possibly not approve the Patrick Henry Charter.

Can students from outside the neighborhood or district apply to Patrick Henry? When will it open?

We need a public school not hell bent on SOL and benchmark tests.

    A) It’s all about politics. The first speaker at the school board meeting was the president of the Richmond Education Association, and they seem to be positioned firmly against it.
    B) Any child who lives in the city can apply to the school, and there is no testing involved.
    C) You’re not going to see any city school without SOLs or benchmark testing. They’re too busy justifying their existence to let anyone try something without any way to prove it works.

Any suggestions on what we can do to help other than crossing our fingers real tight?
I don’t underestimate the ironic potential for complete stupidity coming from a governmental body responsible for education.

We need to write our School Board members and encourage neighbors and folk in the community to get involved in public education whether or not they have children in the RPS. Remind folk that great schools translate into great neighborhoods and city. We need to remind RPS administration downtown that they work for the people. Have petitions been done?

i don’t know if it will be effective, but i found this as a way of sending your school board member an email:

My fingers are still gonna be crossed!

JC- I can say from experience that some school board members will respond quickly and some won’t respond at all. I’ve sent several emails to Mr. Braxton over the last couple of years to no avail, but if you’re more concerned about reaching someone rather than your rep specifically, Bridges, Wolf & Dawson have all been fairly responsive in the past.

NBC12 has picked this story up now.
