FiOS on its way?

Reader Mary sent along the following good news:

Thought you (and your local readers?) might be interested to know that Verizon knocked on my door today to ask if they could use my personal easement to lay fiber optic cable in my neighborhood, (I live sorta near Forest View rescue squad). I gave them permission, and they said that the area should have fiber optic tv and internet (and I guess phone service, too?) by Easter 2008.

FiOS combined with an effort such as Richmond Free Wireless could open up some interesting possibilities.

Absolutely about FiOS and RFW. Thx for thinking about it! I’m waiting for FiOS to get to our house in the Near West End.

Good thing about RFW is that it just needs one gateway connected to the ‘Net either via FiOS, DSL, cable, etc. Then, the nearby repeater nodes that “see” the gateway expand the network out, creating a mesh.

[...] to hear via the Hills & Heights community blog that FiOS is coming to that area!  Since they mentioned RFW in their plug, I thought it only fair to reciprocate!  An RFW gateway [...]

That’s pretty awesome. If FiOS came to the neighborhood, we’d sign up for sure.

Thanks Mary, I’ve been waiting for Fios on the South Side for a while now. I can’t wait to kick Comcast out of my house.

Yah ive been impatiently waiting for it too I live near Grove Ave Baptist church and my CO is Gaskins which they say wont be up till 2008. Anyone else on Gaskins CO?

  6. posted by Bill at September 21, 2007 1:23 pm :

Probably not a lot of Gaskins-area readers here, but I work not far from Gaskins/Gayton and we can supposedly get it here. There doesn’t seem to be much logic as to where it’s available right now, but that’s verizon for you.

What CO are you on Bill? The Verizon contractor said fios wasnt on the Gaskins CO. You live in the area but you may not be on the same CO. If you can check for me thatd be great. If the Contractor lied to me id like to know.

dslreports.com has a place where you can find your Co

Btw whats your phoen company. I heard if your ATT that may delay people for some reason

  10. posted by Bill at September 22, 2007 8:56 pm :

It’s at the RCMDVAGK CO, which is on Gaskins, so I’m guessing it’s the same as yours. The Verizon site said it wasn’t availble, but a sales rep (we’re in process of changing ISPs) said it was.

That’s what I get for trusting a telecom salesperson.

okay look on your phone pole and see if you have a rectangular black box with a orange looking thing coming out the side. That is fios. If you get up close to it the orange thing is the covering saying “caution fiber optic cable”

    Very good news!…

I spoke to Debbie in the Verizon office at 888-250-9710.

For my house (close to Wayside Spring), Verizon is reporting that construction (laying cable, etc.) is due this month.

Debbie tells me that FioS service should be available by late April.

Debbie took my address and phone numbers and will call me when the service is ready.

    Give her a call!

Fiber’s going down in several local neighborhoods right now, so it shouldn’t be long for most of us. Hopefully they won’t jack the prices up too horribly.

They’ve been in Forest Hill Terrace for a couple of weeks, and are frequently down the manhole in front of the fire station. I know they’re doing FiOS ‘cos I asked. :)

  15. posted by Mary at March 6, 2008 11:33 am :

They were laying fiber from the pole at the corner of my back yard (PineNeedles area) to other parts of the neighborhood last week.

  16. posted by Wade at March 26, 2008 3:06 pm :

The Verizon office (888-250-9710) now indicates that service for New Kent Road close to Wayside Spring should be available in early June.
